There’s something about autumn on the Mornington Peninsula that feels a little softer, a little slower - even when the weather can’t quite make up its mind.
One minute it’s sunshine and scooters, the next it’s jumpers, puddles, and a pivot to indoor play. And honestly? That’s part of the magic.
These school holidays, we’ve been leaning into a mix of simple, low-cost adventures close to home - the kind that don’t need much planning, just a sense of curiosity (and maybe a spare jumper in the car).

What We’ve Been Loving Lately
We’ve kept things pretty simple this year - and it’s actually made for some of our favourite days. A few recent highlights include:
- Beach walks between showers
- Scooter rides and playground stops in between snack breaks
- Baking at home with local produce
- Pier walks with wildlife spotting (always a winner)
- Rugging up for an early sunset
- And crafting!

Nothing fancy. Just easy, local moments that add up to something pretty special.
Free and Low-Cost Things to Do on the Ninch
If you’ve been feeling the pinch lately, you’re definitely not alone. We’ve noticed lots of families asking for low-cost ideas — so here are a few of our go-to options that won’t stretch the budget:
- Explore the gardens and autumn colours at Seawinds Gardens. Spot the resident kangaroos and take in one of the peninsula's best views.
- Wander Millionaire’s Walk in Sorrento - a scenic coastal track running past some very impressive homes (with equally impressive views). It forms part of the artists’ trail, with paintings dotted along the way, and finishes near the pier.
- On the other side of the peninsula, the Cable Station Walk in Flinders is a great little adventure. Walk from Flinders Pier up to the clifftop, with a few interesting stories along the way about the old telegraph cable that once linked Tasmania to the mainland.
- Mushrooms have started popping up here and there. See if you can spot any while you walk along the Red Hill Rail Trail. (If you're not familiar with mushroom varieties, we suggest a look-don’t-touch policy!)

- Rockpooling is always fun. We love the Western Port beaches at Shoreham and Flinders at this time of year.
- Flex those leg muscles on the steps at Cape Schanck, wander the boardwalk to Pulpit Rock, and explore around the lighthouse. Whale season is almost here; you might even spot the first of the season.

- Hit the skate parks - Rosebud foreshore, Balnarring, Mornington (near MPRG), and Mount Martha (opposite the primary school) are our favourites.
- Take a big fresh air wander through one of the Peninsula’s sculpture parks
- Head to Coolart in Somers to explore the wetlands, bird hides, and historic homestead. It’s a beautiful spot for a wander. Pack a picnic and make a morning of it.
- If you’re up for a bigger outing, Point Nepean National Park is always worth the trip. Walk or ride through to explore old forts, tunnels, the Quarantine Station and wide-open coastal views.

- Tucked away in Bittern, Warringine Park is one of those quiet local gems. Wander the boardwalks through mangroves, explore the different habitats, and keep an eye out for birdlife along the way.
It’s a good reminder that kids don’t need big, expensive outings - just time, space, and a little inspiration.
