Whether you’re a brave family looking for some fun, spooky stories or just want to explore the Peninsula with a bit of mystery, these sites offer a perfect adventure for all ages. We've listed ten locations that are sure to add some chills to your thrill-filled day out – and you might even spot a ghost (or two)! Plus, don't forget to check out our Mornington Peninsula ABC Book, which gives a nod to a few of these places—minus the ghostly stories, of course.
1. Point Nepean & Quarantine Station
A site rich with history and mystery, Melbourne’s original 1800’s abandoned Quarantine Station has the reputation of being one of the most haunted locations in Australia! Some say the spirits of past patients still roam the grounds, especially around the eerie old buildings. Eerie Tours operates guided night tours for families (with kids aged over 12) interested in hearing the spooky stories that linger in the air here.
2. Cape Schanck Lighthouse
Sitting on the rugged cliffs of Cape Schanck, this historic lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1859. But when the fog rolls in and the sun goes down, some claim they've seen strange lights and figures in the distance. Janice, the local tour guide, is sure to have a story or two to share about strange phenomena here.
3. Sorrento’s Old Tramline
An abandoned tramline might seem harmless, but locals whisper of strange sightings along the tracks, especially during dusk. Imagine a quiet walk with your little ones, only to hear the clanging of an invisible tram echoing through the trees. Spine-tingling, isn't it?
4. Coolart Homestead
This grand old homestead in Somers is surrounded by serene gardens, but some say the house itself isn’t quite as peaceful. Tales of cold spots and unexplained noises make this heritage building one of the Peninsula’s prettiest, but also spookiest stops.
5. Tyabb Cemetery
What’s a spooky adventure without a cemetery? Tyabb Cemetery, with its old gravestones and eerie silence, is the perfect spot to test your bravery. Take a stroll during daylight, and who knows—perhaps you’ll feel a chill down your spine from an unseen presence! It certainly gave us the chills.
6. The Old Athenaeum Cinema, Sorrento
This once-popular cinema in Sorrento has seen many visitors over the years, but some locals believe it still has a few guests who never left. Prior to its recent renovation there was talk of lights flickering, seats creaking, and strange whispers filling the air when the cinema was empty. Could it be the ghosts of movie-goers from the past or Sorrento's much talked about Lady in White?
7. Hastings Hall
With its long history as a community meeting place, Hastings Hall has witnessed countless events over the decades. However, some visitors report hearing strange footsteps and seeing flickering lights when no one else is around. Could the hall’s lively history have left behind some lingering spirits?
8. The Continental Hotel, Sorrento
The Continental Hotel, a Sorrento landmark, is said to be haunted by none other than George Coppin, the famous local entrepreneur who once owned it. Rumour has it that his ghost still roams the halls, keeping an eye on his beloved establishment. Maybe you’ll run into George on your next visit!
9. Mount Martha House
A grand old mansion with stunning views of Port Phillip, Mount Martha House is also known for its ghostly residents. Visitors have reported strange sightings and unexplained noises. But don’t worry—these ghosts seem friendly!
10. The Masonic Lodge, Sorrento
Sorrento has its fair share of spooky site and this historic building has long been a place of mystery and secret meetings. Today, it's also known for unexplained noises and strange happenings. Could it be the spirits of past members returning to attend meetings in the afterlife? You be the judge!
Feeling brave yet? If your family is up for a spooky adventure this Halloween season, why not visit one of these spooky sites and see if you can spot something ghostly? Whether you’re out for a day of exploring or joining a night tour like those offered at the Quarantine Station or around Sorrento, there’s no shortage of spooky fun on the Mornington Peninsula.
